Value Pick – September 27, 2026
Value Pick of the Week
No Value Pick this week, although we’ll be looking at Tapestry (TPR), the upscale producer of the Coach and Kate Spade brands, again next week — it met the technical qualifications this week despite dropping 1.0%, and has a 1-year target that implies a 46.6% gain.
Market Summary
The S&P 500 gained 1.2% last week, with all the heavy lift coming on Monday when the S&P rose 1.5%, then lost a net 0.3% over the rest of the week.
- Oil fell ~8% during the week as Saudi Arabia moved to restore its pipeline capacity and the U.S. and Iran conducted negotiations at the UN General Assembly.
- The tech sector, a major driver of the S&P, had another good week, picking up 2.8%.
- Market breadth stayed weak. Something I look at each week is the ratio of companies above versus below the statistical control limits of the 700+ companies in the Watch List. This week 55 companies are above and 194 are below (0.28). A ratio of 1 or higher is what we like to see.
How Our Picks Fared
Our past picks did well, gaining 1.1% versus the S&P 500 to stand at +22.4%, led by ON Semiconductor (ON) and Meta Platforms (META).
📈 ON Semiconductor (ON) rose 10.3%
- The week before last, on September 16, ON held a “Financial Analysts Day” and announced that it expected its Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for revenue to be 12%–14% through 2030.
- Analysts considered this good news to be too distant to pay for, and ON dropped ~9%.
- After a few days of considering the good news, and seeing other semiconductor companies like Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) picking up double-digit gains, the market relented and ON bounced back.
📈 Meta Platforms (META) rose 13.0%
- Meta launched Muse, its personal AI agent, on September 8, 2026. It’s meant to do things, not just chat — it can send email, fill out forms, book travel, buy concert tickets, reserve a table, shop, and more.
- Last week Muse became the #1 app in the U.S. iOS App Store, passing ChatGPT, and was the catalyst for an 11.4% bounce on Monday alone. Multiple analysts raised their targets for META on Wednesday, with some as high as $995 (+32.4%) — this is an estimate, not corporate guidance.
📈 Apple (AAPL) — six straight weekly gains
- Apple didn’t rise or fall by more than 10% during the past week, but it has quietly risen for six consecutive weeks, gaining 10.3% since its close on August 14th and reaching an all-time high of $354.34 on September 22nd.
